How do I calculate my traffic needs?

We are often asked how many video screenings each subscription covers on a monthly basis or what the traffic consumption might be. Customers naturally want to get an answer to the question – “What are my traffic needs?”

It’s a bit of a tricky question, of course, and the answer varies depending on the number of videos, the length of the videos, and the video quality/video stream that’s usually shown to viewers.

However, it is possible to make reasonably good estimates if you start from the following assumptions:

  • For viewing videos in good standard quality (HQ 480p), the traffic consumption for 1 minute film is about 0.007 GB per view.
  • For viewing hd quality (HD 720p), the traffic consumption for 1 minute movie is about 0.018 GB per view.

Based on the above assumptions, it is reasonably easy to estimate what your specific needs per month might be.

In the following example, we assume that the films are mainly shown in standard quality (HQ 480p):

Example 1
You want to post a campaign video on 3 minutes on a website and you expect about 20,000 viewers on a monthly basis.

Thus, the number of viewers (20,000) x movie length (3 min x 0.007 GB) gives about 420 GB in traffic consumption, which means that you would do well with a PREMIUMpackage(included 500 GB of traffic per month).

Example 2
You want to set up a video banner (15 sec film) and you have budgeted ad space for about 2,000,000 views for a month.

Thus, the number of viewers (2,000,000) x movie length (0.25 min x 0.007 GB) gives 3,500 GB, which means that you would do fine with a Pro account.
